The village of Auchmithie lies on the coast of Angus. It was once the home of the original 'Arbroath Smokie’. It was also once popular with smugglers who made use of the caves in the red sandstone cliffs. The ‘Musselcrag’ that features in Sir Walter Scott's 'The Antiquary' is based on this village.
However the reason we came was to collect the many different types of jasper stones that are found on the beach below the village. When we finished our collecting, Peter, Elizabeth, May and I had a superb lunch at the local ‘But ‘n Ben’ restaurant. I had lobster.
We then drove to nearby Lunan Bay which was recently voted as the best beach in Scotland. It is also well known for its salmon fishing using beach netting stations.
